Eighty kilometres, but the road climbs 1,600 metres — from the plains of Pathankot to the deodar-lined ridges of Dalhousie at 1,970 metres. It's one of the shortest hill drives in India that still feels like a proper expedition, and it's our most-booked outstation route.
The drive leaves Pathankot on the Dhar Kalan road, climbs steadily via Chuwadi, and ascends the switchbacks to Banikhet before the final leg into Dalhousie town. In good weather it's a lovely 2 hour 30 minute run. In monsoon or December snow, add 30–45 minutes and thank the driver for taking his time.
Not every driver drives well on switchbacks. We rotate the same handful of drivers on this route — they know every hairpin and every safe overtaking spot.
